Obituary for Hazel Smith (Petty)

Hazel Jo Smith, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on March 3, 2017 in the comfort of her home, after a short battle with cancer. Visitation is Tuesday March 7th from 6 to 7 at Miller Family Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at Dunn Cemetery at 2PM on Wednesday March 8th. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller Family Funeral Home.
Hazel was born on December 20, 1936 in Teague, TX to Jake and Opal Petty. She was the third born in the family having a brother and three sisters. Hazel married Alton Smith on March, 6 1954 in Seminole, TX. They had one son, Jeffrey Smith. She was a devoted wife and mother, and later in life grandmother and great-grandmother. Hazel spent the majority of her life working with her husband in the cotton farming and ginning business, spending sixteen years owning and running the gin in Dunn, TX. She had many joys in life, the highest among them being dancing with her husband while listening to her son play in the band. She was an avid and competitive card player and especially enjoyed the time spent playing with her sisters and family. In her final years she also became quite the expert playing Pokémon with her great-grandson. Hazel also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with her husband where she was often quite lucky with the slot machines.
Hazel is survived by her son Jeff Smith of Snyder, granddaughter Amanda Smith of Snyder, two great-grandsons Stryder Smith and Merrick Shipley of Snyder as well as, by her many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
She is proceeded in death by her husband Alton Smith, two sisters Janie Dloughy and Ona Mae White, a brother, her parents, and a niece and nephew.
Visitation is Tuesday March 7th from 6 to at Miller Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held graveside at Dunn Cemetery at 2PM on Wednesday March 8th. Miller Family Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements
